New Castle Deli & Grill

January 19, 2022

Immigrating from Yemen to the U.S. in 2010, Queens local Omar has been managing food markets in New York City for almost a decade. In 2021, Omar took the leap and became one of four co-owners of the long-standing New Castle Deli & Grill in Sunnyside, adding his flair to the business by taking item requests from customers. This flexibility is also evident in the kitchen, where people can customize their orders, heat and blend pre-package products, and more.

As Omar shows us around the storefront, he pointed out items that he ordered specifically for customers, which ranged from gluten-free crackers to plant-based meats. We were in awe at the range at the shop and the extra mile Omar takes for his customers. "Most of the stuff here is suggested by customers. They can come and let us know and we will get it for them," he tells us. Customers can contact the deli via Instagram and in-person to let them know their requests.

When asked what the biggest challenge the business is facing at the moment, Omar tells us it is hands-down the high demand and low supply of many products in the supply chain network. They would place an order for a product and get just half of the units they asked for, making it difficult for some customers to shop at the deli if there is no consistency. Working 12 hours a day, Omar describes the life of a deli owner as a hectic, but good experience.

Omar’s highlights at the deli? The range of international, vegetarian, vegan, and hard-to-find items. He also highly recommends their Chicken Over Rice Platter.

New Castle Deli & Grill is open daily from 6 AM to 1 AM.
