One of Sunnyside's favorite barbers has opened his own shop
Nelson Yadgarov is no stranger to the barber shop. Barbering runs in his family - his uncle and brother are both barbers as well - and he has been cutting and styling hair in Sunnyside for 20 years. Almost one year ago in January, he took over Master Barber Shop right in the heart of Sunnyside and re-named it Nelson's Barber Shop. He has a loyal clientele from his many years at Sunnyside's G&G Barber Shop, and has also developed a strong following in his own shop.
Nelson's Barber Shop is a growing local business, offering cuts, styling and hot towel shaves, as well as a complete line of hair products for purchase. The shop's clientele is not limited to men - they also offer women's and kids' cuts, and have been growing in popularity with their special attention paid to children. "We give a superior service," Nelson told us, "our clients feel comfortable coming here, like they were having a conversation in their own living room. We are very much a family barbershop." Discounts are available for senior citizens as well, with cuts as low as $10 for men and $12 for women.
The shop's location in Sunnyside has been great for business. Nelson sees a significant portion of his customers from the neighborhood, but also counts loyal customers from Manhattan and Long Island. "Sunnyside is a beautiful neighborhood with lots of potential," he told us. "New businesses are coming in, and new people are coming in from the city. It's an exciting place to be." While the barbers at Nelson's can do a variety of cuts and styles, Nelson told us that the most popular men's cut of 2014 has been what he calls the "flip top" - short on the sides, long on the top with a slight flip in the front.
