Arthur Weiner, a devoted father, husband, and a cherished community leader, passed away on January 14, 2026, at the age of 81. Born in October, 1944, Arthur dedicated his life to family, community, and the small businesses that helped define Sunnyside, Queens.

Artie, alongside his beloved wife, Rose, was the co-owner of Nelson’s Hardware, which was opened by Irving Weiner back in 1940. The store was located at 43rd Street and Greenpoint Avenue until the building was sold to the Queens Library. Soon after, Artie and Rose opened Nelson’s Christmas Shoppe, a treasured Sunnyside institution that brought warmth, joy, and holiday spirit to generations of families (across the street from the original Nelson’s) Though Artie and Rose retired in 2008, the memories of Nelson’s Christmas Shoppe – the wonder, the tradition, and sense of community, live on fondly in the hearts of all who shopped there.

Artie served as Treasurer of the Sunnyside Shines Business Improvement District for 17 years, where his careful stewardship and dedication supported local businesses and neighborhood growth. Artie had an unwavering commitment to his community and made a lasting impact in Sunnyside. He will be remembered with gratitude, respect, and affection by all whose lives he touched.
