The Sunnyside Arch will be renovated and alit in all its glory thanks to support from New York City Council Member and Majority Leader Jimmy Van Bramer. On Tuesday, October 3, The Council Member, joined by Queens Community Board 2 Chairwoman Denise Keehan-Smith and neighborhood merchants, announced his allocation of $15,000 in discretionary funding to Sunnyside Shines to fix and enhance the historical Arch. The slated repairs will replace the once analog LED lighting to eco-friendly, digital LED lighting while weatherizing the lights to ensure a longer lifespan; the art-deco inspired structure will be preserved as-is. The decision for the lighting to go digital will allow Sunnyside Shines to customize the color accordingly.
Built on 46th-Bliss Street in 1983, the Sunnyside Arch's was to serve as a means of revitalization for the commercial strip of the neighborhood. Its creation came at a time when the economy was in recession with many storefronts vacated. From then to present, the Arch has remain a fixture in the neighborhood landscape for the community and a symbolic gateway to Queens for commuters passing through on the 7 train. As the neighborhood's business improvement district, we are honored to be a part of the Sunnyside Arch's renovation and help to maintain the structure over the years to come.
