Bajeko Sekuwa

May 19, 2019

Known for their sekuwa, or BBQ mutton, Bajeko Sekuwa is one of the latest newcomers to Sunnyside, Queens. Located at 43-16 Queens Boulevard, by Amazon Pharmacy and Dave's Bagel, this popular restaurant franchise in Nepal is one of the first to open in the United States.

"People travel from other states just to come here [Bajeko Sekuwa] because of the feeling and taste of home," said Manoj Devkota, Operations Manager of the restaurant. To re-create the ambience and taste of Bajeko Sekuwas in Nepal, Manager Ram Sharan Shrestha told us that the Nepali artwork adorning the wall and many of the ingredients are flown straight from Nepal.

A glance at their menu shows an impressive range of selection from traditional Nepali food to Indian specialties. Their specialty is BBQ meats, with the Mutton Sekuwa popular amongst staff and customers. The goat meat is sautéed in butter and mixed with their signature Masala spice blend. We tried to get the low-down on the recipe of the blend, but even Manoj doesn't know. "Only the head chefs and founder knows all the ingredients," he responded.
The dish was the foundation of the business that started four decades ago in Nepal, where founder Dinanth Bhandari - known by many as baje ("grandpa") started as a street vendor by the Kathmandu airport. His persistence and commitment to quality led him to his first storefront in Sinamanjal junction. Now years later, we are excited to see their continuous expansion, especially to Sunnyside.
