Starting a business featuring products from Mexican culture has been a vision for Adriana of Adriana Boutique Y Accesorios ever since she was a fashion design major in university. Earlier this year, she actualized the vision, opening up shop at 45-12 46th Street in Sunnyside, Queens, in a shared space with La Nacional. Committed to the designs of her heritage, she adds her own twist, experimenting with her version of the pieces with different color combinations. Adriana recommends pairing colorful jewelry with simple outfits and keeping it simple when donning colorful frocks.
Most of the items she carries are handmade in Oaxaca, Mexico, a region known for its pottery, woodcarvings, and textiles, especially embroidery on cloth items. As Adriana holds up each embroidered piece, she explains the time needed to craft each of them. "This is truly my passion," she concludes. "I'm so happy to have this business and to spread awareness of my culture." Since she started, she has conducted a fashion show and was invited to be a vendor at the Natural Museum of History's Dias de Muertos (Day of the Dead) festival this year.
